Credenza Hunt 2009 came to an end a little over a month ago thanks to boyfriend’s mad woodshop skillz. Since we coudn’t find/afford anything that would be juuust right for records, we decided to build one. I drew, he built. Luckily boyfriend is skilled with the jigsaw.

We also built a coffee table inspired by my intense feverish obsession with George Nakashima furniture, but about $24,900 cheaper. It’s a salvaged redwood slap and mid-century legs – handmade by us in our garage. But I refuse to post pictures of it until I make a slipcover for the lime green plaid couch that’s currently hovering behind it. Soon enough.

oh, and I know you love the floors.

Novelty cakes have a larger following than previously imagined.

Looks like Lauren isn’t the only one with an affinity for novelty cakes. Aside from making new cake friends, WebUrbanist‘s top post today was about cake designs, though theirs take a somewhat…geekier approach. Check them out here. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still want a cake shaped like an iPhone, but something about Lauren’s (see left) are a bit more appealing.

This weekend promises to provide a cakeabration. Check back for photos.

Marimekko at CB2

September 5, 2008

What is it about Finland that allows its companies to constantly produces the most amazing and beautiful designs? I must go there and find out what’s in the water. Case in point: Marimekko. The Finnish textile and clothing design company was established in 1951, and are still producing some of the most seriously beautiful fabrics and textiles today.

I was in the new (insanely awesome) San Francisco CB2 store last weekend with the Rachels, and I noticed they are now selling Marimekko fabric wall hangings! And they’re on sale! A cool alternative to wallpaper or posters, or even as room dividers, the 59″Wx90″H fabric panels have two aluminum rails for easy hanging. There are only a few patterns at CB2, unfortunately none of which I find particularly spectacular, but online fabric super haven Reprodepot has a huge selection of Marimekko panels (including my all-time favorite, HO-HOI!, pictured above. I will own you someday!), as well as other vintage reproductions, if you wanted to make your own.
